TMJ (Temperomandibular joint) therapy is required when acute or chronic stress of the joint results in muscle spasm and/or damage to the joint apparatus. In some cases, the teeth and supporting structures may also be affected. Bruxism (grinding of teeth) is often associated with TMJ distress.

Treatment may include the fabrication of an appliance (niteguard) to be worn when bruxing is more likely to occur, usually during sleep. We may also equilibrate the teeth, which is a process to balance the occlusion (bite). In cases of significant bruxism we can rebuild teeth and protect them from further breakdown.

When the TMJ apparatus has non-reversible physical damage a referral is made to a dental professional specialized in treating advanced cases.
