Root canal therapy is necessary when the pulp of a tooth is chronically inflamed or becomes infected. Decay that reaches the pulp, a crack in the tooth, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or trauma, can result in the need for a root canal.

Fortunately, with modern anesthesia and new techniques, the vast majority of root canal procedures are painless. Also, contemporary endodontics has one of the highest percentages of success of all the procedures performed in dentistry. This success allows us to save teeth that, otherwise, would have to be extracted.

For more information, visit the American Association of Endodontists web site.
