Every year several million teeth are knocked out in sports related activities. Dental injuries are actually the most common type of orofacial trauma that occur in sports. The cost of repairing or replacing a tooth over a lifetime can run into the thousands of dollars. The wearing of athletic mouthguards has been proven to greatly decrease the incidence of injury to the mouth and teeth.

Custom fabricated mouthguards provide several advantages over "boil and bite" appliances. The fit is more accurate which provides for easier breathing. Also, "boil and bite" mouthguards do not provide a consistent thickness. In areas where these mouthguards are thin, traumatic injuries may still occur.
